TONY Abbott has done a pretty good job in the past two years of tearing down Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard. But what Rudd and Gillard are doing to each other is far more damaging.

Rudd says he is the people's choice and Gillard can't be trusted, not even for 10 minutes.

Gillard says Rudd doesn't have the character to lead and can't get anything done.

Rudd has today spoken publicly for the first time about the night of June 23, 2010, when Gillard went into his office and challenged him after months of saying she was more likely to play full forward for the Bulldogs.

He says they agreed - in front of John Faulkner - that she would give Rudd more time to lift his game, but "ten minutes later'' she said all bets were off.

It plays right into Abbott's attack that Gillard can't be trusted because she broke the no carbon tax pledge and broke her poker machine reform deal with Andrew Wilkie. Gillard's biggest liability is that voters don't like her and don't trust her.

But if that is so critical why is Gillard the favourite to win Monday's ballot. Why doesn't Rudd have the overwhelming numbers to win?

It is, says Gillard - and a swag of ministers - because he is hopeless. She says that while Kevin07 was an "excellent'' campaigner, being PM is "not an episode of Celebrity Big Brother''.

"It's a choice about who's got the strength, the temperament, the character, the courage to lead this nation. Who's got the ability to get things done, even in the face of adversity.''

The PM points out that those who know Rudd best got rid of him in 2010 because big reforms languished under him.
