Discussion Rape culture
This assignment will discuss the term rape culture, and discuss the two different points of views the articles “Rape culture 101” were a feminist comes with her point of view and “If Rape Culture is so normal, why haven´t you ever witnessed a rape?” were a Male chauvinism comes with his opinion on Rape culture.
The article “Rape culture 101” written by Melissa McEwan, focus on the feminist view on rape culture. Her point of view is that rape culture is developed into being a culture were it is the woman who are responsible for avoiding being raped. She blames the society for normalising rape, and claim that most things in the society are cape culture.
The other article “If Rape Culture is so normal, why haven´t you ever witnessed a rape?” written by David Garret Brown, focus on explaining how the feminist are wrong in there statements, when they say that rape is normalised and when they claim that the number of people who have been raped are so high. He means that they are wrong, because if rape is normalised and so many people are being raped, it also had to be normal to witness a rape. Because that isn’t the case, he claims that the feminist is wrong. The writer acknowledges that there are people who are being raped and some of the victims aren´t responsible for being raped, but he also claim that some of the women are responsible for there own rape, when they choose to show of their body on billboards etc.
If you compere the two articles, you will se that they both have good points of views on rape and what rape culture is, however there are also some statements from both writers, which are very one-sided and extreme. For instants Melissa McEwan is right, when she claims that it isn´t the women’s fault when they are being raped, however David Garret Brown is also right when he says that some women voluntarily choose to show of there body, and in that way send the wrong signals to men. In the discussion of the number of people who are being raped, both writers come with two totally different points of views. David Garret Brown claims that the number of people who are being raped can’t be high, because 99,99%[1] of the western world haven´t witness a rape, but just because people don´t see rape, it doesn’t mean it doesn´t happen. In the article “Rape culture 101” Melissa McEwan writes that Rape culture have been normalised, but there are nothing about rape there are normal. Even thought some of the things Melissa McEwan claims have influence on the understanding and the determination on what rape culture is, it´s still wrong to say it have maid rape normal.
