Introduction

Human trafficking is the term used today for modern day slavery. “Like many African slaves in past centuries, many people from around the world from around the world are being held captive and forced to work” (Hart, 2009). There are 27 million people around the world whose stories have yet to be told. Some stories end with rescue. Most do not. They remain trapped. They are forced to work against their own will, locked in rooms and factories. Their dignity is taken. Their innocence is stolen. They’re abused, raped, used and that will be their story for the rest of their lives. The bottom line is that slavery still exists. The number of sex offenders and human trafficking cases grows every day. Abusers are growing, while victims stay silent and suffer.

Human trafficking is the big emerging human rights issue for the 21st century, but it’s an awful term, a convoluted euphemism (Kristof 2007). It is important to raise awareness to save the lives of the 27 million people, because the truth is this is happening in our own back yards. In this essay I will discuss the history, and statistics of human trafficking, and what is being done today and what else we can do to end this disturbing phenomenon.

History/Demographics

Human Trafficking is a becoming widespread. It is the fastest-growing business of organized crime and the third-largest criminal enterprise in the world. (Rodriguez, Hill 2011) . When did human trafficking start ? Trafficking in women first emerged on the international political agenda when the League of Nations began to address white slavery in 1921 (Segura, 2010). The trafficking of humans is dated back over with African American slavery. People were sold into slavery for psychical pleasure as well as psychical labor. Who is this happening to?
