Migration in fact is the way of life, explorers and settlers all throughout the world had the sense of discovering and moving to new places all around the world. Salaman Rushdie provides a fact on mass migrations but Scott Russell Sanders counters it with his own different perspective. Through the use of generalizations, hyperboles, and distinction, Sanders suggests that," when we cease to be migrants and become inhabitants, we might begin to pay enough need and respect to where we are." We see this through his first device, generalizations.
Sanders uses of generalizations are quite common in his essay. He uses them to provide facts and sayings that are true to the matter of his topic. One use of generalizations in this essay is when Rushdie states that," the belief that movement is inherently good, staying put is bad; the uprooting brings tolerance, while rootedness brings intolerance; that imaginary homelands are preferable to geographical ones; that to be modern, enlightened, fully of our time is to be displaced." This generalization shows us what Rushdie thinks about the topic on moving. He believes that if the average stays put then they will not excel in life. He explains that if you stay immobile that you will be put into a world of tolerance. Sanders use of generalizations from both sides of the story brings us into terms of what he is arguing with and brings us to the concept of exaggerating or in other words, the use of hyperboles.
Sanders use of hyperboles brings the reader to attention to find out why their author is exaggerating so much. Sanders brings hyperboles into play when he exclaims the point of," stand still, we are warned and you die." This use of hyperboles plays greatly because it exaggerates the fact that if we stand still then we will surely die. He exaggerates this by making it seem like it's not the American way.
