SIMPLE PAST TENSE
- VERBAL
- Use verb (V2) in positive form
- Use v1 or v infinitive in negative and introgative form
Formula:
(+) S + V2 + O
(-) S + Did not + V1 + O
(?) Did + S + V1 + O ?
Example:
(+) I ate the whole cake
(-) She didn’t take that chance
(?) Did you see her?
- NON VERBAL
- There is no verb.
- Use Noun, Adjective or Adverb
- Use To be (was/were)
Formula:
(+) S + was/were + noun/adj./adv.
(-) S + was/were +Not + noun/adj./adv.
(?) was/were + S + noun/adj./adv. ?
Example:
- Noun
(+) I was a student.
(-) I was not a student.
(?) was I a student?
- Adjective
(+) They were smart.
(-) They were not smart.
(?) Were they smart?
- Adverb
(+) The cat was usually here.
(-) The cat was not usually here.
(?) Was the cat usually here?
- ADVERB
- Adverb of Place
➔ tells us about the place of action or where action occured
Example:
(+) The cat was here.
(+) There were flying kites on the top of hill.
(+) He lived somewhere in New York.
(-) She didn’t go upstairs.
(?) Did you come to school?
- Adverb of Time
➔tells us about the time of action occured
e.g: lastnight, yesterday, two days ago, last year, last month.
Example:
(+) I paid a call my friend in the hospital last week.
(-) I didn’t pay the fee last month
(?) Did you sleep enough lastnight?
- Adverb of Manner
➔ tells us that in which manner the action occured or how the action occured
e.g: automatically, beautifully, calmly, carefully , gently, happily, quickly, slowly, suddenly, well, together, fast, hard.
