The comical essay, “Why Are Kids so Dumb?” by Chris Harris introduces the conceptual
idea of what society thinks of the younger generations. For this genre recast, instead of
approaching this situation as a comical scenario, a more serious tone was taken in introducing
this idea of what society of older generations thinks of the younger ones. With this in mind, I am
targeting an audience who falls in the categories of first in year in high school to the elderly.
These are not only students and older people that I am targeting. I am also aiming for those who
are very much related to my topic. And that issue that I am focusing on is “what is the American
education system doing wrong that’s creating this very degrading image of ignorance throughout
the nation?” Therefore, more specifically, students, teachers and parents would be reached out in
order to persuade my position on this issue.
Through this cover page of a magazine that I designed, I hope to achieve what TIME
Magazine is able to achieve (hence the similarity in representation) through their variety of
signage usage through the front page and at the same time introduce subcategories that would be
introduced in the contents portion of the magazine. Although there are not contextual
informational on a cover page, this cover page that I have designed is meant to grab the reader’s
attention immediately through the legible texts, color features, and most importantly, a topic that
everyone will drool over. These texts act as teasers to the readers because it gives them a jest of
where this topic may be leading to. Below are lists of genre features that I have utilized:
• Large image that has a lens blur for a field of depth.
• Variety of text sizes.
• Colored texts.
• Rhetorical questions and topic issues that would be covered in contents of the magazine.
