Social Networking Creates a Strong Society
The social networking is beneficial for society because it helps users to find like –minded people. Users can exchange information, messages, images, and links through social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and Meetup. Parks claims that many join sites to find people with similar interests. This was true for me too. Six years ago while I was visiting my friends in California, I decided to go horseback riding in the Saratoga Hills. Unfortunately, my friends did not share my enthusiasm, so they pointed me to a Meetup site where I could find people with a similar interest. A few days later, after a lot of online conversations on Meetup, I found a companion for horseback riding. Although the ride was amazing, the best part was the conversation with my new friend about horses. We agreed to meet again and since that day we have been inseparable. In fact, a year and half later, we got married. Making connections with like-minded people make user’s lives rich, full and happy. The social networking built unity through sharing common interests and positively affects society because makes it strength.
Another benefit of social networking for society is it encourages self-directed learning. According to Lisa Tripp, co-author of study and an assistant at Florida Sate University ,“… technology … improves self-directed learning…”(qtd in Parks). For example, my network group on Facebook introduced me to web design. It is an interesting area for me, so I decided to explore it. The online communication with other self-directed students on Facebook induced me to start studying this subject by myself. Users directed me to specific topics including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, CGI programming, and design. They gave me a several recommendations on web design textbooks such as Pro HTML5 Programming: Powerful APIs for Richer Internet Application Development by Peter Lubbers, JavaScript, The Definitive Guide by David Flanagan and Don’t Make Me Think by Steve Krug. My online friends supported and encouraged me to work hard. I became skilled enough to help my husband with web development in his software company ZeeMaps. The web design skills I learned via my Facebook contacts gave me new job opportunities. Social networking has a positive effect on society because effective guidance for self-direct learning prepares more qualified people, and they make society strong and successful.
