The Remains of the Day

"The remains of the day" is an internal novel that using first person point of view, Stevens, to telling the whole story. In the novel, the author, Kazuo Ishiguro is using the technique "flashback" to recall the main character, Steven's memory to show the whole story. He also uses "foreshadowing" to given a clue to tell readers that something will happen.
The main character, Stevens, was aspiring the dignity of being a professional butler. However, he had loss different things from misunderstanding the aspects of dignity. For Steven, dignity is constantly hide his own feelings in the novel, put a mask of professional butler all the times, and the ideas of manners and loyalty. Stevens is taking these concepts extremely serious and value. Nevertheless, his own dignity brings the consequence of his life quite seriously, and it is gone beyond recall.
Lord Darlington is the employer of Stevens, which means he is the owner of the house and have absolute authority towards everything happen in the Darlington Hall. Stevens is being an absolute loyal butler to serve the Lord Darlington for a long time period. In the story, when Lord Darlington orders Stevens to fire two maids who are Jews, he had a minute that questioned Lord Darlington. But Stevens didn't show his own feeling and tell Ms. Kenton that it's not their position to judge Lord Darlington, because Lord always has absolute right to control everything in this house. The way of Stevens talking is showing he try to be loyalty to Lord Darlington, he tries to avoid the responsibility after the consequence.
This had happened again when Lord Darlington thinks those Nazi people are his friend, he feel being a kind person for being their friend or try to help them is a right thing to do. But it shows that Lord Darlington also dignify his position in a wrong direction, that is why people are talking about him with a disagreeable face. Lord Darlington had done something extremely wrong but he didn't notice about the situation around him, it led a bad reputation of Lord Darlington after the news report his behavior to the public. Stevens had already lost Lord Darlington because he thinks he has no position to judge Lord Darlington during the conference. He doesn't show up his own feeling about something is weird around Lord Darlington, and given the suggestion, once again. It is all because Stevens
