What are some characteristics of a mockingbird? For one, they are just innocent, beautiful creatures. They do not harm anyone or anything. Of course, they have to eat. But other than strict survival requirements; they entertain. The birds sing and tweet lovely melodies all day. So why would anyone destroy something that is not doing any harm? That is what the entire book To Kill a Mockingbird is based around.
Everyone knows someone who is a mockingbird to them. I know plenty of people that are nothing but kind and helpful; but they are not treated the way the treat everyone else. Matthew 7:12 states, “Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.” Everyone knows the “Golden Rule”. We have been told it since we were children. It is a very good moral to have. I can also say that it is a lot harder to do, than it is to say. I will admit I have a considerably strong personality. I don’t like to be told what to do without reason, and if someone treats me like I am not worthy enough for them, it becomes very hard for me to respect that person. I cannot imagine being in Tom Robinson’s shoes. I understand that in the 1930’s African American people were used to being treated like they meant nothing to society. But I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that Tom was accused of rape when he did absolutely nothing but act upon kindness to Mayella Ewell.
In a way, many characters killed a mockingbird. Metaphorically speaking, Tom Robinson is the mockingbird, and everyone from Mr. Ewell to the jury is the murderers. Although these people did not actually physically murder Tom Robinson, they did contribute to his death.
