Ma-
"Ma ain't nobody you can push aroun'" (64).
Strength: Tough Weakness: Unselfish
An ordinary Mom: Mom's usually put others before themselves like Ma who would rather feed a complete stranger than let him starve (99).
Pa-
"His face, squared by a bristling pepper and salt beard, was all drawn down to the forceful chin, a chin thrust out and built out by the stubble beard which was not so grayed on the chin, and gave weight and force to its thrust" (96).
Strength: Optimistic Weakness: Plain-spoken
Half-full view: A half-full cup symbolizes Pa's perspective in life. He is hopeful that things will turn out for the better and they can migrate to California and to continue living and enjoying life as a family.
Tom
"Sure I [Tom] been in McAlester. Been there four years… I don't give a damn who knows it. An' I'm goin' to my old man's place so I don't have to lie to get a job" (18).
Strength: Good natured Weakness: He killed a man.
Ex-prisoner: These men/women have committed a crime but underneath that many of these people are sensible human beings, capable of putting others before themselves.
Muley Graves
"Muley's face was smooth and unwrinkled, but it wore the truculent look of a bad child's, the mouth held tight and small, the little eyes half scowling, half petulant" (61).
Strength: Faithful Weakness: Stubborn and won't move off his land.
A Dog: A dog's faithfulness symbolizes that of Muley's because even though his lands aren't producing crops that would benefit him, he had decided that he would remain loyal to them just like any dog would remain loyal to his/her owner, no matter the circumstances.
Jim Casy
"Just Jim Casy now. Ain't got the call no more. Got a lot of sinful idears-but they seem kinda sensible" (27).
Strength: Intensity when it comes to religion. Weakness: He lost his calling.
Fire: The intensity of the fire symbolizes Casy's intensity when it comes to religion because even though he has "lost his calling" he refers to his calling and red embers ignite in his eyes (76) due to the passion in which he describes it.
