This translation represents Grendel pursuing the hall of Hrothgar. Grendel is known as one of the Anglo Saxons most vicious monster of the era. Many times throughout the story Grendel always gets the craving for human flesh and enters the halls to find soldiers of Hrothgar’s kingdom. Grendel encounters many battles but can never be defeated. It was said that his skin was incapable to pears with any type of weapon because he was cursed. Even the toughest warriors of Hrothgar's kingdom could not slay the beast. A great warrior by the name of Unferth served Hrothgar through many battles during that time, he was known all throughout the kingdom for his great achievements, but one day when Grendel approached the hall. Unferth felt as though to challenge the great beast to show that no man nor monster could take the kingdom of Hrothgar, but in Grendel’s eyes Unferth was no match. Instead of killing the man he left him alive and afraid. Unferth lived the rest of the days in fear but tried not to show it. Grendel walked the hallowed grounds looking for a challenged but was never matched, until great word was spread that Beowulf one of the greatest warriors of the Anglo Saxons approached Hrothgar’s kingdom telling of great tails when he raced Brecca through the great waters. Beowulf ends up losing the race by getting attacked by eight sea monsters and slays them all. While Beowulf is enjoying his time at the hall Grendel approaches to start the great battle between the both but in the end he is slain by the great warrior and is left to die with one arm.
In this translation it is shown that Heaney explains of Grendels hunger towards the men of Harthgar. Barging into their great mead halls to destroy their true existence. In Grendel's eyes he is cursed by the Gods to live the land forever as a beast without a soul. He is forced to feast on meat and human flesh.
