“Remember, Remember the 5th of November, the gun powder treason and plot, I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot”

Our world revolves around different concepts of change. Whether it be through different ideas or different circumstances, Change is a cause to be different. It is unpredictable, yet inevitable. Change is, quite simply, to be different to what the circumstances originally were. This is, without a doubt shown in Raw, and the concepts of the change found in this text are extended, challenged and supported upon by different connotations of this concept in V for Vendetta, an award winning film directed by James McTeigue.  These perceptions of change are supported by a plethora of different techniques, of which will be analysed further upon.  My main thesis of change is the fact that our relationships with the world and things around us are continually changing

In the related text I have chosen, V for Vendetta, many concepts of change in Raw are supported upon. As evident in both texts, a negative or disheartening event, leads to positive change as “there’s always a light at the end of a tunnel”. This positive change adds an extra layer to a bare character, whether it be through a hardened shell to an originally emotional character (Evie Hammond) or an extra level of empathy that would make an originally “running from the law” character realize his mistakes (Brett from Raw).  However, these extra layers each character receives come from a negative event that occurs in each of the character’s universes. In V for Vendetta, it is Evie’s imprisonment, which enables her to develop to be a stronger person, and in Raw its Brett’s original arrest which causes him to undergo his journey of change. Through this, we see that V for Vendetta supports Raw’s concept of change, in which a negative event can change the relationship you have with the world and those around you.

The changes that we see in Raw and V for Vendetta are consolidated through a number of techniques, with the first being the use of symbolism. The use of symbols is major in V for Vendetta, with the first being the symbol of the letter received by Evey during her imprisonment.

I remember how quickly different became dangerous…… I always wanted to know why they hated different so much”

This excerpt from Valerie Page’s letter, shows how unfair and just the society was. It shows that because she was lesbian, she was tortured and eventually killed. The symbolism of this note is the fact that it doesn’t just show the audience how cruel the society was, it shows Evey too, thus prompting change. After she sees this letter, her relationship with the world around her changes, and she immediately wants to join V to help overthrow the government. It is also worth mentioning that this is also an example of an anecdote. The technique of symbolism to show change is also apparent in Raw, and it supports how change is shown in V for Vendetta. The symbol is of the character Rebecca, with her bad influence looming over Brett serves as a reminder to him that he needs to change, just like Evey needed to change due to a reminder she had received.
“Gravity doesn’t like me tonight, Rebecca said, it’s not the only one” is a quote that shows Brett’s dislike for her.
