What is work? The meaning of work varies between people as they perceive it differently. To some people, work is meaningless and to others work is vocation. (Chapter 2, Work Lars Svendsen). So, do we work too much these days?

Based on my opinion, we don’t work as much as people who worked 50 years or even 200 years back. This is because people those days worked more physically and nowadays we work more mentally. The existence of technology like machines and computers has made us to reduce our physical work. For example, use of machines for productions and infrastructures which require less physical activity. Most of our hassles have reduced as we work online like submitting applications online instead of submitting it in person. Besides, with the existence of World Wide Web, we can even work from home which we can earn lots of money in return without need to physically struggle. If compared to 50 years back, there is less use of machines and are required to build railways and buildings using their physical strength. There was no working from home concepts as well.

People those days have to work hard to get good salary to accommodate their family with large number of children. This is another reason why we don’t work too much these days as the government takes care of the nation.

Besides that, we are often being affected by being unemployed and this causes hazard to our health. Due to the economic uncertainty in Europe and the United States of America, many people have to face unemployment. In countries like Portugal, Italy, Germany and Spain unemployment rate is the highest because of the economic turmoil.
