In “Taking Social Entrepreneurship Seriously” (2007), J. Gregory Dees believes that social entrepreneurs have good capability to solve many social problems because they are able to work freely under no government limitations. The author is determined to make the readers believe the importance of social entrepreneurs in solving many social problems and therefore willing to help social entrepreneurs in reaching their purposes.
Dees doubts the effectiveness of government and charity to repair social problems and encourages depending on social entrepreneurs for solving many social issues. Government is limited by bureaucratic regulations and strict financial plan. It rigid structure hinders instant modifications and innovations to eliminate social illnesses. Moreover, it carries big stake on every projects because the money used to fund those projects comes from people’s taxes. On the other hand, Dees thinks that social entrepreneurs have all the independence and flexibility they need to act inside and across the nations as quickly as possible. They are able to make adjustable counter action to handle constantly changing social problems. Social entrepreneurs have better chance to solve the problem because they work decentralized, closer to the field, and have detailed knowledge about specific social problems. Moreover, since social entrepreneurs are privately funded, they are able to try the solution one by one to handle certain social problems with less risk for the society. The author also sees that charity only provides ephemeral relieve from poverty while social entrepreneurs flexibly innovate to find best opportunity to handle poverty, and then create sustainable impact for the society.
