Reflection of week 1

After 2 weeks’ waiting, I finally began my practicum.

Unlike what I thought before, the whole learning process is self-controlled, instead of being told by staff there. So I have to manage time carefully and take a note whenever I had some confusion. I was so impressed about how patient and nice the staffs are here. They were all willing to provide any help to me. For instance, when referring to the fundraising, I have no idea about Raffle; so staff here explained to me so clearly, not just its definition, but how does it actually goes in this place. I was totally motivated.

On the second day, my supervisor deployed some paper works to me to collect potential venue and guest speakers for the incoming project. So the rest of this week, I began a literature review and paper search. Just like what I have done in undergraduate University’s lab, literature reviews and paper search need focused concern and are time consuming. Even though it is a little bit boring, it is definitely necessary for me to acquire more knowledge about our projects. At the same time, this process could also help me to improve my reading skills. For example, at the first day, I can only finish reading 3 papers a day, but at Thursday, the number of it doubled.

Another thing about my placement is that our chef is really nice. The curry he made is second to none, which made me totally enjoy my lunchtime.

There are not so many office workers here, and everyone works independently. I made a schedule to arrange tasks. It is not as busy as what I though recently, which means I could take time to accustom myself to their culture. Anyway, this week is a good start and I am looking forward to having more experience in the future.
