Gesture-Based Interfaces: Practical

Applications of Gestures in Real

World Mobile Settings

Julie Rico, Andrew Crossan, and Stephen Brewster

INTRODUCTION:

This article is about the mobile phone gestures and their practical application. Basically this research paper is influenced by “Put that Paper” system introduced in 1980. The paper discusses about the reasons why the concept of gesture interface is popular in gaming or novelty applications among users, and why do they are NOT willing to accept it outside the respective mentioned fields.

The article illustrates two important areas of gesture design for mobile gesture and body based interactions. Firstly it discussed whether it is socially/culturally acceptable to use the gesture based interface then the mobile faced interface? It discusses the methods which can be applied to make it socially applicable, and secondly the paper discussed the use of accelerometer based sensing to enhance practical implications of creating gesture recognition. The article also illustrates the body-based interactions where these sort of scenarios might be used successfully.

METHOD:

The thing under consideration is designing a multidimensional interface that is effective and also enjoyable for the user, how it can achieve both aspects researcher has conducted a study. According to the article it is necessary to make the item that is acceptable in the society i.e; to program with such gestures which are socially acceptable otherwise it may be a huge fiasco. The author states that previously the methods used were:

1) surveys

2) On-the-street user studies

3) Experience prototyping

4) Focus groups

Researchers argue that it does not provide the necessary required information as these methods doesn’t provide about the info outside the context of speech and some of the findings about public opinions regarding gestures are very unacceptable in some societies.

Although public opinions do has their value. The challenge is now to design such gestures which are not only acceptable but also according to the perception and needs of the users.

The user friendly gestures are described as gestures which the people can use when they are on the move. For example while driving, in train or bus or crossing the street. There are numerous things on which the user has to focus on like sight, while driving or hearing etc. the author has named it a “body based interaction”. Writer has provided with three studies which explain the body based gesturing namely; wrist rotation, head pointing and foot
