Augustus

The Deeds of the Divine Augustus was written in 14 A.C. by Augustus on two bronze pillars. Augustus subjected the world to the rule of the Roman people. These inscriptions included acts of generosity that Augustus committed during his life, with regards to both Romans and non-Romans. It included deeds such as treating the captive states kindly and building temples and shrines in honor of others. The inscriptions begin with Augustus’s success at the age of nineteen to prepare and army at his own expense and ends with him talking about his conquests of the sea.

One of the notable differences between Augustus and other individuals we have learned about so far is shown in the building structures. Most of the other individuals we have talked about in Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations that have been in power have built statues and buildings in honor of themselves. Augustus, however, notes that he built structures for other people without putting his name on it to receive any credit (even though he boasts about it in his inscriptions). He mentioned building a temple to Apollo, a theater of Pompey, and several other structures for others. 1 This surprises me because I’m not used to these leaders doing things for other people; all of the leaders we have learned about have erected statues in memory of themselves.

Confessions was written by Augustine. Book one focuses primarily on Augustine’s childhood. The autobiography is written in a very philosophical nature and mentions god throughout the book. Book 1 begins with a paragraph praising god.
