Development of rowing on the banks of the Dniester
Only during the Soviet period the Transnistrian School of rowing produced more than 300 Masters of Sports of the USSR and international masters of sport. In May 1962 in Trakai (Lithuania) Moldovan rowers took part in the first international regatta "Amber oars " ("Янтарные вёсла") , where they have made a good competition to the Baltic athletes. Rowing was developed, rowing office was open and in Bender. Here grew famous rowers – Stars of ‘70 – ‘80s, champions and winners of the Soviet Union, Europe and the world. A special place in the list of Champions takes Larisa Popova from Tiraspol. In the 1976 at the Olympic Games in Montreal (Canada) she won a silver medal, in 1980 at the Moscow Olympics - gold medal. Larisa Popova forever has written her name and city of Tiraspol in the chronicle of the Olympic Games. Rowing in Pridnestrovia continued to develop even after the collapse of the USSR. During the 20 years of the Republic more than 30 athletes-academics have become masters of the sport. For active sports works, contribution to the development of rowing in connection with the 50th anniversary of the development of rowing in the PMR many coaches got high state awards – medals and orders. Among them are Olympic champion Larisa Popova. She was awarded with the Medal of Honor.
In 1972, in the starting lineup of the USSR team for the first time to participate were included in the Nations Cup in Copenhagen two crews consisting of Victor Tashko , Oleg Lyashenko, steering Tarlana Jafarova, Vladimir Munteanu and Michael Derevenko , after a convincing victory in Kiev in the international regatta in pair with the steering and without. In the next 19 years in a row of the USSR team at fourth Olympic Games and 18 world championships acted 37 our athletes.
