Foundations of Mythology
Mythology, what exactly are myths, where did they originate? What are cultural differences in myths? These among many other questions is what I will be explaining and answering in this assignment, so without further ado welcome to the world of mythology.
The origin of Mythology
Mythology has no exact origin, mythology stretches far beyond one culture. For example there are Arabian, Chinese, Egyptian, Norse, Korean, and of course the two that get mostly talked about Greek, and Roman. These are still only but a small number of cultures that have mythology, mythology tells the stories of ancestors and the origin of humans, the world, the gods, and every other supernatural creatures like satyrs, nymphs, and so on. In Greek Mythology “Lefkowitz (1999) states that at first there was only chaos, and out of chaos came a number of forms including Earth (Gaia), which gave birth to heaven (Uranus), and then we have the whole cosmos formed with all its gods.” In Norse mythology it is said that Odin, Vili, and Ve dragged Ymir’s dead body to the center of the abyss and that was the place where they created the world from Ymir’s body parts. The flesh became the land, the bones became the mountains, the hair became the grass and trees, and the eyelashes Midgard. As you can tell even though they are two completely different cultures one thing still remains the same that both myths use a void or abyss as the center of creation.
Popular culture
In popular culture there are a lot of myth influenced things, from movies to roller coasters you can find pretty much anything these days influenced by mythology some of my personal favorites are, shows like Spartacus even though the show is mostly about how the gladiator Spartacus went on a rebellion against Rome, since it was based around 111 BC it is mixed in with the myths of Rome. One book that got me into Greek mythology was Percy Jackson and the Olympians, it’s about a demigod who is the son of Poseidon and his quest to stop
