- History & Back Ground;
External Affairs: The US government fought communism & helped other countries which suffered from it. The idea that if Communists take over the southern part of Vietnam other countries in the region would become Communist too. President John F. Kennedy adapted this and started sending military advisers to help the South Vietnamese army. Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon Johnson started sending ground troops to Southeast Asia.
Internal Affairs: During the 60’s the US was changing with common civil rights movement for Afro-Americans. Also, American politics with the assassination of famous leaders John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert ran for president in 1968 he too was killed and civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Towards the end of the decade more and more Americans protested against the war in Vietnam.
- Summary of the war
The Conflict in Vietnam: Vietnam had been a French colony since the 1880s. The Vietnamese fought for independence and won in 1954. The country was split into communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam. In the early 1960s South Vietnam tried to overthrow the government. North Vietnam helped the South Vietnam. The United States sent military advisers and supplies to help South Vietnam. In 1965, the U.S. sent soldiers to Vietnam.
Heuristics: The U.S. was spending billions of dollars on the war. Many American soldiers were dying. On television people saw soldiers fighting dangerous battles and the terrible results of U.S. bombs on Vietnamese people. Some people thought the United States had to fight communism everywhere. Others thought the United States should stay out of a war between North and South Vietnam. The government drafted young men into the army. Many did not want to fight in a war they believed was wrong. People had antiwar demonstrations in many parts of the country, all that happened during the presidential period for Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) as result Over 55,000 Americans died in the war and US spent more than 20 billion dollars on Vietnam War.
Personness that influenced the war decision : in the US decision system there are full systems for those kind of decision as congress approval for war after that approval for budget … etc. a lot of steps for war decision approval , Since the decision-making process fixed and not changed during Vietnam war, we will discuss how people influence impact on the decision making process and make different results , in our paper we will focused on main personness that affect the decision process were Lyndon B. Johnson (36th US president) , Clark Clifford (Formal white house consul ) , Robert McNamara ( former united states of defense) and George ball (Diplomat)
