The impact of prison security is influenced by the prison environment. In many cases prisons use the unit management concept with additional contingencies that are easily incorporated in the event that the environment changes. There are several policies and procedures that are in place to enhance the inmate management and security. Unit management allows correctional officers to break down the prison into smaller components, spreading out the some of the authority to manage inmate population. This also allows the staff more access to the inmate population under their control. A major benefit of unit management type of structure is it provides the staff the ability to monitor inmate activities. That is a vital aid to the inmate’s rehabilitation, by observing how each inmate behaves daily. Staffing is another vital part of the environment, staffing includes correctional officers, social workers, correctional counselors, educational, and mental health advisors. All the staffing helps to ensure security and proper measures by allowing staff to observe potential issues prior to the inmate becoming a situation. This type of management has help prevent or lessen illegal activities, such as gambling, and physical assaults. Unit management system combined with inmate classifications help to ensure security and proper custody. It has proven to be effective, but because the inmate population continues to grow, correction officers are unable to prevent every casualty from happening and in some cases lockdown is necessary. There is lockdown in facilities to keep inmates safe when correctional officers receive substantial information of a possible strike or uprising.
