I'm sure everyone has heard the song "itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini" and I apologize if it gets stuck in anybody's head for the rest of the day. But I'm wondering if you ever really listened to the lyrics? A couple days ago I heard it on TV and decided to actually research the lyrics. I'd like to review some of them with you. The first verse goes:
"She was afraid to come out of the locker
She was as nervous as she could be
She was afraid to come out of the locker
She was afraid that somebody would see"
The song continues that she was afraid to come out in the open so she hides in her blanket and then she is afraid to come out of the water, so she starts to turn blue. Why was this woman so afraid? Back than guards at the beach would measure girl's swimsuits and if you were wearing a bikini you got kicked out of the beach right away. So it's no wonder the girl in the song was afraid to come out of the water. The song was released in the 1960s, 14 years after the bikini was invented in France. French engineer Louis Reard (lowie ray-ard) invented the bikini on July 5, 1946. He named the bikini after the site of the atomic bomb testing that year, bikini atoll. He thought that the public's reaction would be like an atomic bomb explosion. I would say the bikini has influenced a lot of people. You go to the beach today and it seems like everyone is wearing a bikini and I'm pretty sure it's easy on the guy's eyes as well. The bikini could have some negative influences on people and the world, but I'll stick to the positive things. Fashion matters. It influences the imagination and drives the way people uniquely represent themselves. In the current world of swimwear, small is often beautiful and less is considered more desirable.
