Executive Summary
This report provides an analysis and evaluation of current transportation issues, the mass rapid transit project in Jakarta and its impact on Jakarta’s road traffic condition. Methods of analysis include statistical researches, and all materials, figures, and tables are taken from official and reliable sources. The purpose of this report is to assess and analyze information about the current transportation condition and issues in Jakarta, and to evaluate the effectiveness of future MRT in Jakarta and to end the traffic congestion in Jakarta.
This research draws attention to the fact that the number of vehicles in Jakarta keeps increasing in the rate of about 9.5% annually, while the 7650 road length is not sufficient to accommodate all the vehicles. Moreover, the ineffective public transportation system didn’t put an end to heavy traffic congestion in Jakarta. The total number of public transportation vehicles only account for less than 2%, however, is accountable for 56% of total trips in Jakarta. In 2004, a research done by the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) estimated that if there is no change in the traffic level, Jakarta would hit a total traffic gridlock in 2020. To counter the traffic in Jakarta, the local governor of Jakarta started the construction of the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) in 2013. The MRT will provide 412,700 available seats for the passengers in their first phase, and another 629,900 in their second phase. The construction of the first phase of the MRT will be done and useable in 2018. The estimation price of the MRT is between 8 to 12 thousand rupiah. Further investigations reveal that the MRT later on will be integrated with public areas such as malls and office buildings to ease the passengers’ access to the MRT stations. Moreover, the MRT will also be integrated with other public transportations to transport the passengers to their designated MRT stations.

- Introduction
A primary objective of this research report is to analyze current public transportations and traffic condition in Jakarta, and to evaluate the effectiveness of MRT in Jakarta. According to the latest official population census in Jakarta , population of Jakarta increased by about 1.2 million people in just within 10 years (Deacon, 2013), and the roads insufficiency in accommodating the increasing number of vehicles has been the main cause of traffic woes in Jakarta. In the last 5 years, the average annual growth rate of the number of vehicles was about 9.5%, while the annual growth rate of road lengths was just about 0.01%. It was predicted that Jakarta will face ‘grid lock’ by 2020 if transportation infrastructure is not improved. The local government has tried to overcome this problem by providing alternative public transports such as the Transjakarta buses. However, this approach has not been really effective, due to the inconvenience, and lacking number of buses. In 2013, the government started the construction of MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) in order to overcome traffic congestion in Jakarta. The MRT will stretch approximately 110.8 km, and is expected to be useable in 2018. Along with the city’s population and economic growth, Jakarta will require a more reliable mass public transportation. The convenience and mobility of the future MRT is believed to be the answers to Jakarta’s traffic woes. This research report will discuss the current traffic condition in Jakarta, ways to implement MRT in Jakarta, and the effect of future MRT on traffic congestion in Jakarta. The purpose of this research report is to evaluate the effectiveness of future MRT in Jakarta and to end the traffic congestion in Jakarta. This research will not be conducting an interview or questionnaire. In contrary, this research will obtain information from previously conducted surveys from around the world. The validity of this research should be guaranteed, as the report will use only official information and results of previous surveys.
