Learning/Literacy Narrative
My mother and grandmother have played a significant role in my educational life, they taught me most of the basics of reading and writing. They basically gave me a jumpstart in education before kindergarten had even begun. I was a very smart kid, like Shannon Nichols I was a good student. “Throughout my elementary and middle school years, I was a strong student, always on the honor roll.” (Nichols 36) In this quote she explains that she was always on the honor roll meaning she always had good grades. I too had good grades rarely falling off of the AB honor roll. I had nobody but my mother and grandmother to thank. They are strong women, and pushed me to be the best I could be in everything that I did. Just when they thought they had succeeded in teaching me everything I needed to know and was now in the hands of the teachers, something happened that left me in the hospital.
I was in the 3rd grade and like any other normal day I met up with my best friend. We made our way to the flipping bars, it was a daily routine. We were having a contest who could flip the most times without throwing up. Well I gave a good run. Came in second with what I believe was 30 flips consecutively. They were all teasing me “don’t throw up that would be embarrassing” I stood my ground and surprisingly didn’t throw up. We were all having fun. Then we heard that dreadful sound, the school bell, or as we called it the party pooper. We all headed to class eagerly awaiting lunch time. It was our favorite because we had a long recess.
As they dismissed us I went and found my best friend, we walked outside and straight to the flipping bars as usual. It was my turn to flip. I got up on the bar sitting on it like a seat then throwing myself backwards. I flipped a few times then hit my head, I asked a teacher if I could go to the nurse but I wasn’t bleeding so her answer was no. I went back to the bars, got on and started to flip. Before I knew it I flew off the bar. I don’t remember what happened just remember blacking out.
My best friend Jio wanted to walk me to the nurse but the teacher thought we just wanted to mess around so my other friend J.C walked me there. I remember falling down and not being able to get back up so J.C picked me up and carried me. We got to the office and all I can remember is the fluorescent lights hurting my head to the point that opening my eyes felt like I was looking at the sun. J.C got in trouble because she got my blood on her and the nurse starting yelling which to me felt like someone was blowing an air-horn in my ear. The nurse sent J.C back to class and sent me to lay down. She called my mom but no answer so she called my grandma and told her that I couldn’t ride the bus due to a ‘little bit’ of blood in my hair.
My mom was sleeping because she worked nights and my grandma was at work so it was hard to get ahold of them.
