Research Proposal

ESSENTIAL PROPOSAL ELEMENTS

GUIDELINES

Tentative Title

  • The tentative title for your research paper should not restate the paper’s topic (e.g. Video Games)
  • It should suggest your plan to enter the conversation, signal your position in a debate, or in some way to give the readers a hint of your research purpose.
  • Are We Ready For The Tesla Autopilot?

Introduction to the Research Issue

  • This section introduces your issue and research field. You might include a brief anecdote explaining what brought you to your project.
  • How did you get interested in the subject? Did you develop it from personal interests, base it on an issue important to your academic field, or springboard it off of a reading or issue discussed in class?
  • By Tesla, the autonomous driving system became a reality. People expect that they will be free from the burden of driving. Even more, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla announced in the TED Talk that in 2019, all Tesla models will be updated to do the cost-to-cost and state-to-state drive. He even mentioned that the driver could enjoy his/her free time, detached from the steering wheel.
  • As Tesla has been a leading company in the autonomous driving system, I have been astonished by the way he makes the things happen. However, after watching his talk, I was curious whether it is socially acceptable at the moment, even though it is feasible in technology.

Rationale for Your Research

  • Include an explanation of the significance of your research. How will your research contribute to the larger academic conversation?
  • What Elon Musk says is trustable, as he has never broken the promises he had said. However, he has not mentioned about the responsibility of his technological innovations. In fact, the driver using Autopilot was killed in a crash on 7 May 2016. It was caused by the misinterpretation of the vehicle's camera, by confusing the white color of the lane and the truck in front of the vehicle. However, he said that it was caused by an inadvertent driver, not an Autopilot. Also, he said it was all that insurance company should cover.

Research Purpose

  • Describe the purpose of your research. What do you hope to achieve through your research (i.e. call to action, change in mindset, reinforce ideas)
  • How do you plan to enter the academic conversation?
  • To let people know that there is a downside of Autopilot, and call for an action that the Tesla should not put autopilot systems in their vehicles before perfecting the technology.

Target Audience & Relevance to Target Audience

  • Describe your target readers
  • Why should your target readers care about this issue should be important to them.
  • Ordinary people, including petrolheads and people who do not know much about automobiles.
  • As Tesla launched its branch in Seoul and vehicles with Autopilot system will be on the road soon. People should know the downside of it, not just the bright side.

Background of the Issue

  • Establish the areas of your research and provide a context for your research problem/question.
  • The collision occurred while the driver was using Autopilot on the highway. It was caused by misinterpretation of the camera, confusing the color of the lane and the truck in front of it.

Research Overview

  • Describe your preliminary research and reading you’ve done so far.
  • Can you briefly describe each of the sources you found thus far or group sources together in logical ways?
  • What has your research shown you thus far?
  •  Based on the background, Tesla and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration took a lukewarm gesture on the accident. The NHTSA judged that the accident was intrigued by the overly trust of Autopilot, which is not perfect at the moment and Tesla did not recall the vehicles. However, after 4 months, Tesla totally updated Autopilot software.

Research Question(s)

  • What is your main research question?
  • Are there other sub-questions that you will need to answer in order to help you answer your main research question?
  • Should Tesla keep applying Autopilot, which is imperfect?
  • Who is responsible for the crash by Autopilot driven vehicle?
  • Should the government regulate the equipment of Autopilot in vehicles before it gets perfect?

Working Argumentative

Proposal Claim

  • What is the tentative answer to your research question?
  • Tesla is responsible for the crashes caused by Autopilot.
  • Autopilot should not be equipped on vehicles until it gets perfect.

Tentative Reasons (Solutions)

  • What solutions would your propose to support your claim?
  • What reasons would you give for each solution you propose?
  • Tesla insists that Autopilot is an impeccable autonomous driving system. But it caused fatality on the driver. Tesla argues that the accident could be prevented if the driver were concentrating more on the road. It is a contradiction.
  • Even though it was a driver who was inadvertent, Autopilot has promised and given trust to people that it is safe.

Counterarguments

  • What are some possible objections readers may have to your claim or reasons?
  • How would you respond to those objections
  • Experts insist that Autopilot will reduce more than 40,000 accidents a year when it is fully developed and distributed.
  • The accident rate caused by Autopilot is much lower than the accidents caused by human drivers.
  • The market share of Tesla Automotive Group is really small at the moment. And the number of human drivers outnumbers Autopilot vehicles. Also, we cannot surely predict the statistics of 2019, when all vehicles are equipped with the autonomous driving system, including Autopilot. If vehicles with Autopilot (autonomous driving system) and human drivers are on the road altogether, more accidents will happen in reality.

Plan for Completion

  • What kinds of sources will you need to find?
  • What kinds of evidence do you think you will need?
  • Anticipate the conclusions you expect to reach at the end of your project.
  • Articles about the Autopilot crash.
  • The lecture by Elon Musk in TED-ED.
  • Tesla should not put Autopilot system in their vehicles until they have perfected the technology.
