Malaysia is known as one of the most popular tourism destination in the world. Is Pulau Langkawi, one of the tourism destination in Malaysia which having the wild eagle statue as the landmark on the island, still the same as the one we familiar with? The growth of tourism in Pulau Langkawi has actually fasten the development in this island. We have to investigate whether the government overwork with the development in Pulau Langkawi and causes the original culture replaced by the latest technology and current trend. The people who originally stayed in Langkawi has clearly viewed that the current Langkawi has changed so much from the original island. The locals have to be firm in protecting the culture in Pulau Langkawi so that the beauty of this island will continue attracts tourist all around the world. On top of that, government plays a very essential role in protecting the preservation of the attractions in Langkawi.

In this study, we will discover the history of the island and observe the current development of the island. Then, we will compare the old and new Langkawi and discuss about the outcome of the tourism impact in terms of culture and heritage. In the end of the report, we will come out with suggestion which can lead the development of the island to the correct path. 

Brief History on Langkawi

Langkawi is The Jewel of Kedah. It is also the main island from a cluster of 99 islands. The area where Langkawi is now located was known as a pirate area. This is because Langkawi was a place where pirates hide in the olden days. Langkawi is an island with many legends and myths that circulating until nowadays. The most popular legends is the Mahsuri. Mahsuri is a beautiful maiden who live in that island. Due to envious by others, she was wrongly accused of committing adultery and was sentenced to death.
