Cape Verde is located in the west coast of Africa it consists of 10 islands. It was discovered by the Portuguese colonial in the 15th century. They used the island for slave trade. The country had an estimated 500,000 people. Their primary language is creole, which is similar to the Portuguese language. Cape Verde received their independence in 1975 from the Portuguese, with the help of Amiclar Cabral. Nearly 38 percent of the population lives in country areas according to the 2010 Cape Verdean census. About 20 percent lives below the poverty level and currently their literacy rate is around 85 percent. The country is primarily democracy, they voted every 4 years for presidential elections. Cape Verde has been classified as a developing nation. It has had international recognition by other countries and international organizations, which often provide development aid, which has helped the country economics growth.
Cape verde consist of ten islands and they are as followed: Santiago, Fogo, Brava, Maio, Boa vista, Sal, Sao nicolau, Santa Luzia, santo Antao, and Sao Vicente. Each islands are unique in their own ways. The languages are the same but each of the ten island, the people speak with an accent. The foods also vary among the islands. The tastes are different due to the different type of seasons that they use. Certain holidays are also celebrated different among the islands. The type of music also differs depending on the island. The capital city of Santiago is Praia which is also the capital of Cape Verde; it is one of the largest islands. It has a city setting with high sky building and a lot market and city living. Nothing is growing in Praia; everything has to be imported from the other islands which are known for agriculture. Praia also is where the main Airport is located. Most travels stop in Praia to board plane to travel to the different island. Also the president of Cape Verde resigns in Praia, where he is protected by armed guards.
