Considering the past
Reflecting back on the brainstorming writing assignment
from week one, the two events I chose are one, when my brother
was shot and the other event I chose from the week one assignment
is when I enlisted in the United States Army.
The reason I chose these two events because these events
have affected my life in many ways. With my brother being shot, I
had problems dealing with the fact that he could’ve possibly died.
Even friends I grew up with that were shot by guns did not really
help me deal with ether tragedy. Some of my friends died but my
brother did not. I began to struggle with life and death at a very
young age.
Enlisting in the United States Army was a matter of necessity
and independence. My parents had divorced in the fall of 1992 when
had enlisted. Even though I knew my parents where divorcing, it did
catch me off guard as I always thought my parents would be together
forever. The divorce, I believe, did affect my personal relationships
throughout my life.
Urie Bronfenbrenner proposed a theory of ecological
systems, which focuses on broad, interconnected influences on
human development. It proposes that we can best explain
development in terms of the interaction between individuals and the
environments in which they live (Bronfenbrenner, 2004).
With my brother being shot, this event ties into the first
system, microsystem, by way of the daily environment why lived in.
