Tuesday July 23, 2015. It was afternoon, and I had finished a morning dive with some friends, Moutaz and Saif. We were eating on the beach and talking about our dive. Suddenly, we heard someone from the water shouting for help. I stood up a looked, and there was a diver in the water, waving to us on shore. Another diver appeared to be beside him, but was not moving. The first diver was shouting for us to help him, and that his friend was unconscious. They were both approaching the shore.
Me, Moutaz, and Saif stood up immediately. I sent Saif back to the dive shop in order to call 911 to activate the local emergency medical services. He went. Saif and I went into the water to meet the diver and his unconscious friend. The diver informed us that his name was Gary, he and his friend Aaron came from Sweden some weeks ago to dive in Aqaba. They were both certified but had only dove there once before. He said that at around 25 meters his friend Aaron began to act strangely, then when he turned around next his friend was not moving, laying face down on top of some coral. He attempted to wake Aaron, but was unsuccessful. He then made an emergency ascent to the surface, but Aaron was still not moving. They were almost 40 minutes into the dive when he surfaced.
Saif and I helped Gary remove his SCUBA equipment and carried him to the beach. En route, I checked for pulse and breathing. Neither were present. I laid him on his back and began chest compressions immediately and asked Saif to get the medical bag from my car. Once he returned with it, I was able to supplement the chest compressions with breaths delivered from a bag valve mask, checking for chest rise and fall with each air delivery. Because we were all wet, I could not apply the AED to shock him.
Then an ambulance came along with paramedics. They immediately took over CPR, and one asked us what we saw. Gary explained the situation, along with me and Saif, and we explained what had happened.
