Initially many people could go into the work force and get a decent paying job with just a high school diploma or vocational certificate. Sadly that has now changed, with many companies asking for their employees to have some kind of college degree before entering the work force. Of course having a college education does open more career opportunities for you, and also opens more doors for you to ultimately obtain your career goal. Having a college degree in your resume is always good to have listed on your resume, and also an eye catcher to employers during the hiring process. Also having a college degree does allow you to obtain a higher annual salary. The median annual salaries for PhDs are $100,000 or more, Master’s $63,000, Bachelor’s $55,700, and associate’s $42,000, and High School Diploma $32,500. (College Atlas, 2015) Another thing to consider is having job stability within your career. Having a college degree does allow you to have better job stability then not having one at all. At any time during an economic downturn, most employers will cut jobs at the bottom of the totem pole–positions requiring unskilled labor. (College Atlas, 2015) This fact can be highly unsettling to some people that feel that they could lose their job at any time, and should motivate people into considering expanding their knowledge.
