The ways we use land in the US is very diverse. There are many different categories we use land for. National land use is only 42%. There is a high diversity of different types of land in this country. For example, most of the land use is forestry but, other usages are rangeland and pasture, croplands, desert tundra and wetlands, parks wildlife refuge wilderness, and then urban usage. Land ownership in the US is very vast. Most of the land owned in the US is owned by private owners who buy the land. Federal land is the second greatest land ownership, then state and local ownership, and lastly, Native American ownership.

There are many different categories for public lands as well. The categories for public lands are multiple-use lands, moderately restricted-use lands and restricted use lands. In multiple-use lands many activities are allowed such as, logging, mining, livestock grazing, farming, oil and gas extraction, recreation, sport hunting, and more. The activity which is prohibited in multiple-use lands is off-road vehicles. Moderately restricted-use lands also have allowed many activities, but they do not restrict any activities. Some of the activities are sport hunting, trapping, commercial and sport fishing, mining, logging, and grazing. Restricted-use lands is different then the rest because it has units in the National Park System, and National Wilderness Preservation System. National parks may only be used for camping, hiking, sport fishing, and boating. In National recreation areas the same activities are allowed plus sport hunting, mining, and oil and gas drilling. In the National Wilderness Preservation System, open areas are for only recreational activities such as hiking, sport fishing, camping, non-motorized boating. The restricted activities here are motorized vehicles, logging, livestock grazing, mining, commercial activities, and buildings are all not allowed.
