I wasn’t surprised at the article in itself. I was surprised that the parents of some of the children would pull out of the test just because they didn’t want to talk to their kids about race. I believe that it is something that needs to be talked about and, if they weren’t ready to have the ‘hard discussions’, maybe they should have rethought having children. By not talking about it, everyone who’s not like them in a racial group. Now, I don’t have my own kids but I have many nieces and have many friends who have kids and I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to tell them about different races. I also wasn’t surprised that kids do notice that people look different then they do. How often to you see a child staring at someone in a wheelchair or using a walking stick? What about a child who doesn’t have a lot of money in his family who sees someone of a different class. If the other class is driving a fancy car and has on expensive clothes, the child is going to stare. I see it all the time and kids stare because they don't understand why these people are different, regardless of their race.
Sweeping the obvious under the rug may solve a problem for a little while, but the effect will be worse in the long run. If a child doesn’t understand the differences between people or if their parents aren’t willing to talk with them about it, they’ll find other outlets to get the information from, which could turn out worse. If a child goes to an adult who doesn’t share the same views as the parents, they may come home one day with some stereotypical views of their own. It’s best to stare down the issue and get it over with then to let it fester.
I found some interesting articles that are kind of on the same page as the baby discrimination we were asked to read about. The below article talks about two women who’s doctor decided not to care for their child because they are lesbians. These women handpicked this doctor because of her approach to medicine and were turned down because of their sexual preference. This is just awful for one, but I believe it’s against the law as well.
