In this review I will discuss Michael Mousseau’s article “Market Civilization and its clash with Terror.” Mousseau’s article is about the relationship of globalisation and economies and how it creates and influences terrorism against the Western World. He depicts that terrorism is an outcome of clientalist societies transitioning into market economies, as the leaders of the clientalist societies do not want to relinquish their power. He dismisses the possibility that terrorism is a means for poverty stricken individuals to demonstrate their angst against the United States and their allies and states it comes from “in-group” distrust through outsiders. Mousseau’s review shows a researched theory in the origins of terror however; his review is heavily focused on the September 11 attacks on the United States, without much reference to other terrorist attacks. He also makes claim that the real origins of terror come from those who will lose in the market economy and then concludes with the idea that market economies are the problem and the solution to the problem of terror.
Throughout Mousseau’s review he makes reference to the September 11 attacks on the United States and goes into great detail about the possible causes of this terrorist event and the reasoning behind it, but does not divulge other terrorist attacks against the United States and its allies. The attacks on the world trade centres and pentagon do account for the majority of life lost in terrorist attacks against the United States, but this this was only one terrorist attack (Knight and Murphy 2003, p. 192). Mousseau’s research mentions the attacks in Bali 2002, but does not show the same in-depth research into the attack. Instead uses it to outline how the attacks were conducted by the middle class society against the global market economy as a result to the collapse in the local currency in 1997.
His research into the Bali Bombings did not included much rational reasoning behind these attacks but rather used it to confirm that this was an attack on the globalisation of the market economy. In the article Nakashima (2003) it states that the Bali bombers admitted to “discuss a plot to kill westerners” which does not correlate with Mousseau’s article as he claims they we attacking the Christian Indonesians. If Mousseau is to make reference to an attack such as the Bali bombing in 2002 then he needs to show supporting evidence that terrorism is caused by a clash with a clientalist economy shifting to a market economy. Mousseau has been selective in the terrorist attacks he has mentioned in his argument and did not mention any domestic terrorist incidents in his argument like the Oklahoma bombings. Therefore Mousseau’s argument has over generalised terrorism and needs to be more specific on what kind of terrorism is created from clientalist economies.
