Abstract

This report discusses the beginning and current period of extraordinary rendition in the United States and how it has grown into something much more than a one-country operation. The growth of this program within the American criminal justice has increased drastically since it first started in the early 1990’s, from only being an American operation to a global dependence on extracting suspects connected to any possible threat to a country. Discussions, debates, and human rights controversies have been all a part of the operation; to see how detainees are handled from the point of secret abduction to the transportation to disclosed locations around the world. These people are international threats to our global community and must face against justice and disperse any accurate information. Unfortunately in our current world it has come to this extreme that countries must use standard procedure of going through the working process of extraordinary rendition.

In the mid 1990’s, the U.S. administration needed to find a way to fight against terrorists, but in a way that has never been thought of within the U.S. government. Countless ideas had been proposed within the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, but none would seem to have the correct forte that the agency would agree on. Soon enough, a decision had been concluded about a controversial program proposed by the C.I.A. in 1995. The proposed method was then brought up to President Bill Clinton, which then he approved the program of extraordinary rendition in the United States, and it launched immediately.   Rendition was put under the study to see if this program would accurately aid the ability to collect highly classified information on terror and would provide help for the U.S. presidents to keep the rights of freedom and peace of our country. On the other hand, the critics convulse in conversation that this program creates a negative outlook on our American government.

Extraordinary rendition does not particularly involve typical everyday criminals in the United States, the program interacts with people much worse, terrorists. After much detailed work on collecting intelligence from reliable sources, disguised American agents would abduct suspected terrorists in the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe, to be taken to be disclosed location with their identity to be temporarily terminated. The suspect is prohibited to have a lawyer present and their families will remain in question of where their loved one is. To get these suspected terrorists to disclosed locations, the U.S. government provides small registered false American company jets, such as, a Gulfstream jet. Prior to a flight, an officer from the administration of the U.S. department of state would provide a ‘to whom it may concern’ letter. “This letter made clear that their mission offered ‘global support to US embassies worldwide.’” (The Guardian)
