In 1933, Adolf Hitler established the first concentration camp. By the end of world war 2, there were hundreds. The camps were divided, there were concentration camps and there were death camps. Jews were not the only people to be put in these camps. Gypsies, homosexuals, and the mentally retarded were also included.
The living quarters were unbearable. The rooms were dark and dirty. Most were infested with fleas and lice. There were no windows. The roofs leaked, which caused mold to grow on the floors and walls. There were 75-250 people crammed in a 16x19 foot room. There were no beds, not even hay. They were forced to use each other. The sick were crammed were crammed with the healthy. The sick were always treated badly. If they couldn’t work, they were useless.
The executions were heartbreaking. The Jews were tricked and confused. Maidanek camp was established in 1941. In its 3 years of operation, over 1.5 million Jews were killed. Most were killed in gas chambers. Naked men, women, and children ( one group at a time) were forced into the “bath houses.” each house had heads which either hot water or hot gas was pumped through. After the water/gas was going blue toxic crystals were dumped into the chamber. The process of gassing began, and within 2-10 minutes, everyone was dead. Jewish slaves were forced to clean out the bodies and sort the belongings. They would shave their heads and ripped out any gold teeth. If not worked or gassed to death, some were used for medical experiments.
