“How to make a Kaleidoscope”
Purpose: To demonstrate to my audience how to make a kaleidoscope.
Central Idea: Creating an old optical form in the age of modern visual mediums.
INTRODUCTION:
I. Kaleidoscopes were invented in 1816 by Scottish inventor David Brewster. He was studying several aspects of physical sciences including polarization of optics and the properties of light. While looking at some objects at the end of two mirrors, he noticed patterns and colors were recreated and reformed into beautiful new arrangements. With that, he named his discovery after the Greek words kalos, meaning beautiful; eodos, meaning shape; and scopeo, meaning to look at. Hence, Kaleidoscope simply means beautiful shape to look at.
Kaleidoscopes became very popular during the Victorian Age as a parlor diversion. Its popularity continued through the mid-1900s, but it slowly declined because of the rise of television, cinema, and the establishment of the digital age.
Today I will show you how to make this little treasure from the past.
