How to Use an External Urinary Catheter

There are two types. The “Texas Catheter” is a condom fitted with a hose coupler at the end to attach the leg bag via latex or silicone tubing. Danger! Will Robinson! This style is probably OK for standing use but any kink in the hose creating back pressure or if the appliance isn’t arranged just right with respect to height of the drain end having to be lower than the back opening will most certainly create a potential leak situation.
The second type is coated on the inside with a very effective pressure- sensitive adhesive. The glue-band is placed so that the adhesion occurs well behind the head of the penis.
Through experience I have found that these steps will insure maximum enjoyment of this device:
1.) Before putting the condom on, make sure your penis is wet with plain tab water or alternately, you can lick the inside of the rolled up sheath.
2.) Use the wet condom to masturbate a bit to get an erection. Retract foreskin if present. Do not unroll the sheath until you are erect! Just spin the condom around on the crown of the penis to stimulate it.
3.) Finally, roll the sheath over the erect penis and squeeze the shaft tightly where the glue band is to create a good seal.
All of this insures that no part of the adhesive contacts the sensitive crown of the penis.
Now, removal: It can be a problem if you want to remove the device immediately after installing it! The few times I thought I needed to get it back off so soon, I had to resort to rubbing alcohol in addition to soap and water and lots of scrubbing to weaken the bond. The easiest and least painful way to remove the appliance is to simply wait. After 24 hours, the natural oils in your sweat glands will weaken the bond such that the condom is easily removed with the normal soap and water used during a shower.
