Situation A.
- You have a number of extra-curricular activities listed on your resume. Are there any associations to which you belong?
Ans. You can emphasize more on the extra-curricular activities in order to know about the skills the candidate has and how good he/she is at networking. You can ask if the candidate is a part of any professional association as long as it is not affiliated to discriminate on the basis of nationality, sex, race etc. But do not ask them to name the associations because it would be inappropriate and may also violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Freedom of Association under section 2(d) and Ontario Human Rights Commission.[1]
- Tell me about a time you were faced with a tight deadline that you weren’t able to meet. What was the outcome of the situation?[2]
Ans. It is very important to ask this question because then you’ll know how well the candidate can work under pressure and how does he/she respond to constructive criticism. If he gives an example at least he/she is being honest about their experience.
- Why did you leave your last position?
Ans. It is necessary to ask this question because it will be of relevance to us and the reasons justified will tell you a lot about the candidate. His/her experience in the last job will gives us a sense of what he/she expects out of the position that we’re offering. If the person doesn’t have a good reason we can try to find how loyal he/she is to the company or if there is any underlying performance related issue.[3]
- Are you planning to take any other classes or completing any other certification or designation that will assist you in your career growth?
Ans. This question is appropriate since the applicant will be able to apply the theory that has been learned in the workplace. Also certification or designation will be a valuable asset and will give the applicant an upper hand over others.
- Do you have any arrangements made for the care of your child while you are at work?
Ans. This question can’t be asked for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is illegal to ask this question under the section 10 of Family Status of the Ontario Human Rights Commission because it can be viewed as discrimination based on family status and is prohibited. Even if the candidate has stated that he/she has children, there is no requirement to ask who will be taking care of them.[4]
