Lessons for Young Lawyer by

Fali. S. Nariman

“Apropos recent unfortunate events and how disheartened we all are at them, my appeal to you is to take heart.”

 Fali S. Nariman.

Mr. Fali S. Nariman starts by describing the freedom we have in the country saying that we can discuss freely and publicly that is topical without any restraint and then he compares the freedom which we have in India with that of Malaysia and Singapore where, a talk about the conduct of the junior lawyers in court a person needs a police permit.

The author expects to talk to young lawyer and by young lawyers in this article the author just does not mean the recent pass out of a law school or a university who recently entered in the law profession, but the person who is young in the art of how best a person is in the manner of argument before the Hon’ble Court.

The first lesson which the author gives is to subordinate the ego of an advocate in the court.

The author starts by talking about the support of family by describing the book of the British Author David Pannick which was dedicated to the sets of people he was closest with and they were (1) First his father-in-law who was a non-lawyer but he could argue from any side of the proposition with equal effect. Thus, he was described as a true advocate though not qualified to practice. (2) The second set of people were his wife and members of his immediate family and each of those will be never miss the opportunity to never tell him as to where Mr. Pannick was wrong.

This is the object lesson which the author is dedicating to us saying that let the family members be critical to you and not worshipful of you; this will teach you humility and will also give you the essence of Sense of Humor.

By this the author wants to convey that practicing lawyer has to subordinate his ego-in court as the judge himself will be having the ego which is more important than yours.
