CHAPTER 1.0: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Company's Background
Malayan Banking Berhad or formally known as Maybank, was founded in 1960 by a Malaysian tycoon, the late Khoo Teck Puat. Maybank is the biggest company in Malaysia whereby in Malaysian Stock Exchange, Maybank stand tall among others as the largest listed company. Maybank is formally chaired by Dato' Sri Abdul Wahid Omar who is also the CEO of the company (Appendix 1). Currently, the position of chairman is still undecided until further notice. Today, Maybank had expanded up to 401 branches in Malaysia and 2200 branches around the world which made Maybank a well-known leading company whereby Maybank was in the top 500 of the Forbes Global 2000 leading companies around the globe.
1.2 Maybank's Philosophy
Maybank wanted to excel in both corporate governance as well as corporate social responsibility in its business operations. While their aim was to be successful in operational and financial, Maybank never once forget to contribute to the community especially to help those who are under privileged. A commitment to sustainability is the key to everything.
In practicing sustainability, Maybank focus on four elements which are community, environment, marketplace and workplace. Firstly, in empowering communities, Maybank offered The Maybank Foundation Scholarship Award to help top scholar to reach their full potential. Besides, Maybank also organized Cahaya Kasih, an employee volunteerism activity whereby Maybankers volunteer in developing communities' events and also fund raising activities (Appendix 2). Secondly, in environment, Maybank showed its concern for nature by collaborating with Malaysian Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT) to conserve the wild tiger habitat (Appendix 3).
