Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION
- Background of the Study
The lack of open space in Manila makes it difficult to construct and plan an urban park that has wide coverage. Urban Park or Public Park is a park in a city or municipality that offers recreation and green spaces for the residents and visitors. The design, operation and maintenance is usually done by government, typically on the local level, but may occasionally be contracted out to a park conservancy, or private sector company. An urban park is designed to improve the quality of life in the city which in turn makes it sustainable. There are few urban parks in the Philippines that are located in Metro Manila, most of the well-known parks are those who covers huge amount of land. There is also a new trend that promotes linear park in order to reduce pollution, this however needs a stretch of land; which in the case of Metro Manila impossible. The lack of open space in Manila makes it difficult to construct and plan an urban park that has wide coverage.
There are several concerns from news articles at different publishing companies and different websites, concerns regarding Metro Manila’s pollution and making it green. Those who have concerns about pollution states that the problem of pollution in Metro Manila is increasing instead of decreasing and it is because of the activities of man, whether it is an infrastructure or the activities of man that affects the environment. I have narrowed the reports and articles on pollution into air pollution which is a problem being faced by Metro Manila every day, it of course caused by smoking, smoke belching, factories and other hazardous activities that affects air. The other articles regarding making Metro Manila green discusses the effects of pollution suggests a common idea – put up a park, they say that it would help reduce the effects of pollution. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Department of Health (DOH) are taking steps to make the issue of air pollution in our country reduced.
