The gap between knowledge of ethics and being an ethical person is in the thought to action process. A lot of us, including myself do not think before we speak or act. Our knowledge of ethics are only put to use when we stop and think about how we are affecting other people lives.
When we are in public our manners are suppose to be used. This makes us an ethical person. At lunch time we go to a restaurant, the waitress comes to take our order. I order an ice tea no lemon and you order the same but with lemon. However, when she comes back she has a water with lemon and an ice tea with no lemon. Using my knowledge of ethics and being an ethical person, I turn to her and politely advise her she brought the wrong drinks.
The flip side of this could be I was having a bad day and instead of being politely, I am rude and inconsiderate. The young lady runs from the table crying because I acted before I thought about her feelings. How would I know if she lost her train of thought because he boss yelled at her, her mind was on her sick child, or relative?! I don't know the first thing about this person so I choose to do the right thing.
I have watch people make other people cry because they are rude and inconsiderate. To me the gap is our own preference of how we treat others.
