More Do-It-Yourself Health Care: Apps and Technology
Technology has made do-it-yourself patient care much easier. This goes beyond just a patient's ability to look up their symptoms online. There are apps to help with autism, apps that can simulate a check-up, apps that can monitor conditions. Wearables can motivate you to move around more or sleep more or check a diabetic's glucose level. But how does all this helping yourself make your health care better? How much is too much? And what does this mean for your privacy? After all, the health care industry accounted for 43% of all major data breaches in 2013. Meanwhile, although 93% of health care data call for protection by law, some surveys suggest only 57% of it is "somewhat protected." What could this mean for your privacy and personal information if security doesn't get better?
Medscape is an app built by the same company as WebMD which acts as a medical resource for more than 3 million physicians, medical students and other healthcare professionals in the U.S. due to its extensive coverage of medical news and research in 30 different specialties. The app is beneficial to anyone interested in learning more about the medical field from a practicing physician to a medical student at any level. This app covers a comprehensive range of topics with a keen focus on quality across many different medical disciplines.
One of the major problems that many in the medical field face is that sources of credible information are extremely hard to come by online, therefore in the past it’s been an annoying process of searching through textbooks, case studies and other documents from multiple sources as opposed to having one reliable source to work from that isn’t like the jumbled results from a Google search. With the growing use of tablets and mobile phones, there was a real need to shape and distribute the immense amount of medical information out there today to the very people using these devices to learn or reference this material overtime. Medscape is one of the better solutions for consuming medical content anywhere on the go, due to the simple nature and robust user experience, tied with the vast amount of quality information available from its database. The information can be accessed for free by anyone with an interest in the medical field looking to better their understanding of a given subject.
