There was chocolate pudding smeared on the exterior of his seventy thousand dollar hot rod. His three year old granddaughter Taylor had just gotten excited about the pretty car, forgetting the pudding cup in her hand. I was appalled and thought for sure he would be furious! With patience and calm that must have come from somewhere deep within, he gently kissed Taylor on the head, agreeing that the car was very pretty while he quietly cleaned off the pudding splatter. The Amazing Man, My father was the most influential person in my life. Because he was quiet and sometimes misunderstood, most people didn’t see the real person he was. He was famous for his problem solving skills and keeping his cool in troubling situations, and he was an extremely interesting man.

He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He often sought out the local Amish community to trade hay from our field and in return, they would build things that he needed on the farm. He once followed his secretary home and protected her from her husband that had just gotten out of jail for abusing her. He would anonymously tuck money in the lunch boxes of his employees if he observedthat they were in need.
Additionally, he was famous for his problem solving skills and keeping his cool in troubling situations. His official title at work was commercial superintendent but he wore many hats. I remember in particular an amazing accordion door that he designed in a new building to resolve a space issue that was missed in the original plans. If a jobsite was dangerously over budget and behind schedule, he would come in and somehow save the day. One jobsite required that he have a large water truck onsite. I was on the phone with him the day that his backhoe operator punctured the water truck and flooded the whole jobsite.
