Overview in Researching
If you ever want to know more about a certain subject, topic, or anything specific the best way to learn about it is by researching the topic. There are many different ways to research a topic but not every way is going to be helpful for that topic. For example, the exercise “Let’s Buy a Car” shows that in searching for a new car you can look at the car fax, Kelley Blue Book, or go to the dealership but if you want to know how to repair a car you can look in the owner’s manual or go to a car repair shop. This shows that there is more deeper thinking into researching than you think. With researching you need to consider what information is valuable to the topic, how to make the topic more specific, and to know what sources are credible.
When I research I want to know information relevant to my topic and useful for understanding my topic better. One way I research is through databases by using advanced searches to allow me to select key phrases or include words I do not wish to incorporate in my researching. Assignment 1 is an example of finding key phrases in a research topic or question because with these key words I was able to narrow down a website giving me exact information about my research question. With knowing the key phrases all the researching I did from there on became easier and helped me find results faster and more accurate. Key phrases can also narrow down a research question or topic into simpler terms.
Starting out with an idea can be hard to put into a research question. I chose a topic that interested me because I knew that it would make it easier and enjoyable to research. From there I used the “Search Strategy Exercise” to divide my topic into three key ideas which helped me narrow down to a research question. After completing that exercise I now have strengthened my knowledge of making broad ideas into specific ideas. From then on every assignment I completed I looked for the concept ideas of the assignment and figured out what each task I had to complete for that assignment. For each of these tasks I needed a credible source.
