Puppy VS Adult

The decision to bring a dog into a home is one that should not be made lightly. Dogs require a significant amount of attention as well as a multitude of space, resources and time. Once the decision to bring a dog home has been made the next question is whether to get a puppy or an adult. Both possess an immense amount of benefits and drawbacks, and each category should be evaluated thoroughly to ensure that the correct decision is made. This essay contains both the pros and cons of each category of dog.

First, puppies usually require significantly more attention than do older dogs. They should not be left alone all day and usually need to use the restroom every two or three hours. The housebreaking process itself often proves to be quite demanding unless the puppy is supervised and is taken outside to potty at regular intervals. Also, puppies do not have any formal training and need guidance in basic commands such as sit, come, stay and down. In contrast, puppies tend to be easier to train than older dogs that are already set in their ways. During the teething process, puppies tend to be quite destructive. A new pair of shoes or the curtains of the window can easily become the latest chew toy for an exuberant puppy. However, puppies can be an absolute joy to live with; especially in homes that have children or owners who have a flexible schedule. Puppies are also free to shape and mold as the owner sees fit as they hold none of the emotional or physical scars that can potentially plague older dogs.

On the other hand, adult dogs usually do not require near as much attention as puppies. Most often the housebreaking portion has already been completed and the dog understands that the correct place to use the restroom is outside. While no formal training may have occurred adult dogs tend to know their basic commands as well. Mature dogs can fit seamlessly into a new home and are intelligent creatures
