Unforgotten
Do you have someone in your life who has meant so much to you that you would do anything to be as close as you can to them again when they're gone? Mary Rebecca Gassmann, she liked to be called Becky, was the most amazing woman that you could ever come across, my grandmother meant the world to me. She helped me with advice and taught me things I still use today. My grandma could always make me smile when I was down. My grandmother was one of the most caring and compassionate of role models. She was the easiest person to talk to and the sweetest person to get along with. My grandmother changed my life forever.
My mom, dad, two brothers, my sister and I would go to my grandma's house every weekend in Troy, Missouri. Her house wasn't too big and there wasn't much to do, but she owned seven acres of land, so there were many things to do outside. The closest house to her was about ten minutes away. We would go out there to give her company, cut her grass, talk to her and spend time with her. My grandma wasn't too old at the time. I remember her hair was white but she always wore these brown wigs so she didn't have that white hair she always hated. My grandma wore the cutest clothes though, I mean as cute as they can get for the elderly. She always wore this bright pink lipstick, it was her favorite. Every time I talked to my grandma it was as if I was speaking to an angel, her voice was always so soft and sweet, delicate as a flower. While my older brother, my mom and dad would be cutting the grass, my sister, younger brother and I would be inside because we were too young to help at the time and most the time it was too hot to even be out there to play. My younger brother Corey and younger sister Rebecca would be watching TV while I talked to my grandma and helped her with the dinner. My grandma's food was always the most magnificent food you would ever have tasted, she was the best cook I have ever known. She made the kitchen smell like heaven. The scent of her hash brown casserole always made my stomach growl. My grandmother put hash browns, cheese and cornflakes on the top. She always made the best beets in the world; it was as if you were taking a bite into a piece of candy, they were so sweet. My grandma made the dessert while she was making the dinner. I always wanted to eat that as soon as it was done. She made a lot of different desserts but the peach cobbler had to be the best of all. The first bite that I took would always make me feel as if I died and went to heaven. My grandma is the reason I know how to cook to this day. I will always be grateful to her for that.
