Strategic Safety Program
Safety in the workplace is one of the biggest obligations of an organization. All employers are responsible for protecting their employees, as well as all assets if necessary. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), states, a strategic safety program should have three goals. (1) "Reduce occupational hazards through direct interventions, (2) Promote a safety and health culture through compliance assistance, cooperative programs, and strong leadership, (3) Maximize effectiveness and efficiency by strengthening capabilities and infrastructure" (U.S. Department of Labor, 2014). Under OSHA, all businesses are required to create and maintain a safe working environment for its employees.
Unsafe Employee Actions
There are many views to consider about safety, health and the wellness of an employee. The most important factor requires protecting all workers from total harm, especially in the workplace. Therefore, all organizations should be prepared to handle any situation that involves the safety of their employees. Unsafe employee actions can stem from just about anything such as a small disagreement between employees to not following proper equipment usage procedures, which can lead to a dangerous working environment. Consequently, a safety plan has been created and introduced for implementation.
Workplace violence is one of the biggest issues in today’s job industry that companies are forced to handle. Most of the time, these problems are surprisingly noticed too late to manage without confrontation. Therefore, employees will be trained and made aware of ways to handle various issues.
Focus and Design of the Safety Program
The safety program is going to be addressed in a PowerPoint presentation meeting and hands-on training during the first day of the employee being on the job. There is an orientation phase of employment where everyone gets acquainted with the facilities, ground maintenance, and safety of the establishment and other employees. Every employee will be required to attend the training before working on the floor at the company. The focus will be on unsafe employee actions that have been witnessed, and reported to safety officers over the years. “The first approach in a safety program is to create a psychological environment and employee attitudes that promote safety. A corporate culture needs to exist in which employees are involved and engaged and have the opportunity to provide input on changes to their workplace. Studies show a positive link between employee engagement and involvement and safety performance” (Mondy & Martocchio, 2016, p.344).
