My name is Acanthus; I am 12 years old, once living in one of the most growing cities in the world, Rome. This is the story of the day I almost died. The day I lost my family. The day Mt. Vesuvius erupted. This is the story when everything went wrong.

It started off as any other day. The sun’s rays was beaming down on us and kids my age, older, and younger playing in the streets, having the time of their lives. Isn’t ironic how their day starts off so good but turns into one of the worst days of their lives. I wasn’t a very social kid, so I was usually by myself playing with my dog, Argo. While I was playing with my dog I see blur of people walking past me. While I saw people blur past me, but two beautiful women I saw in the corner of my eye. I was listening into their conversation and found out that their names were Bellona and Camilla. I found out that they were old friends and happily married. I decided that their conversation wasn’t worth my time so I left to go to the forum.

There in the forum I see so many people buying gifts, buying new clothes, and buying new accessories. There in the forum I ran onto a middle age woman named Theodosia, who was buying a gift for her daughter’s birthday. She told me her daughter’s birthday was going to be tomorrow and that if I wanted I could come. I said no to her and they I left her there heading toward my uncle Flavian, whose is almost blind and always lose his things.

Once I enter his my uncle’s house I knew something was not right and it was getting pretty cold outside. I look up in the sky and I saw this bid purplish cloud and in the distant I could see smoke coming from the mountain, but I didn’t think it was anything. When I was helping my uncle find his glasses we both felt the shack of the earth breaking all of the vases sitting on the table. The next thing I knew me and my uncle were running out of the house and hearing the screams all around us. Up in the sky I saw that you couldn’t see the sun and the whole sky was all black.
