The Millennials: A new generation of employees, a new set of engagement policies
In the article entitled, “The Millennials: A new generation of employees, a new set of engagement policies” by Jay Gilbert posted in Ivey Business Journal, it discussed the reason why should the company update its engagement policies to increase the retention rate of its employees. It is one of the problems the company’s facing since there is a change of generation of employees from Baby Boomers to Millennials. The company policies in place are drafted towards the needs of the baby boomers, the articles states the reason why it should be amended to better address the needs of the current employees.
Baby boomers and Millennials are of two different generations that have distinct characteristics. They have a lot of differences which creates a generation gap; also evident in the workplace. Baby boomers are tend to be optimistic and grew up in a corporate hierarchy wherein they follow strict rules and abide by the company’s policies. Millennials are more of a creative one; they are much confident with themselves and often seek challenges.
Millennials are more open to changes; they are flexible on how things should be done. They try to come up with a way on how to detach from the step-by-step procedure. They are driven by feedbacks from their colleagues but it should be specific and clear so as to avoid misinterpretation. They want an assurance how good their works are. They have this need to be valued and recognized. They do well by doing good in a task.
Employees take pride of their organization. How well their employer values them is the same way they will reciprocate to them. Employees often tend to live by the company’s mission and vision.
